چکیده
ackground: Risperidone has been shown to be clinically effective for the treatment of aggressive behavior in children, yet no information s available regarding whether risperidone exhibits aggression-specific suppression in preclinical studies that use validated developmentally mmature animal models of escalated aggression. Previously, we have shown that exposure to low doses of the psychostimulant cocaineydrochloride (.5 mg/kg intraperitoneally) during the majority of pubertal development (postnatal days [P]27–57) generates animals that xhibit a high level of offensive aggression. This study examined whether risperidone exerts selective aggression-suppressing effects by sing this pharmacologic animal model of highly escalated offensive aggression.

Animal models of excessive aggression: implications for human aggression and violence.
Escalated interpersonal aggression and violence are common symptoms of multiple psychiatric disorders and represent a significant global health issue. Current therapeutic strategies are limited due to a lack of understanding about the neural and molecular mechanisms underlying the 'vicious' shift of normal adaptive aggression into violence, and the environmental triggers that cause it. Developm...
متن کاملThe Vicious Cycle Towards Violence: Focus on the Negative Feedback Mechanisms of Brain Serotonin Neurotransmission
Violence can be defined as a form of escalated aggressive behavior that is expressed out of context and out of inhibitory control, and apparently has lost its adaptive function in social communication. Little is known about the social and environmental factors as well as the underlying neurobiological mechanisms involved in the shift of normal adaptive aggression into violence. In an effort to ...
متن کاملAcute and repeated intranasal oxytocin administration exerts anti-aggressive and pro-affiliative effects in male rats.
Socio-emotional deficits and impulsive/aggressive outbursts are prevalent symptoms of many neuropsychiatric disorders, and intranasal administration of oxytocin (OXT) is emerging as a putative novel therapeutic approach to curb these problems. Recently, we demonstrated potent anti-aggressive and pro-social effects of intracerebroventricular (icv) OXT administration in male rats. The present stu...
متن کاملEffects of adverse early-life events on aggression and anti-social behaviours in animals and humans.
We review the impact of early adversities on the development of violence and antisocial behaviour in humans, and present three aetiological animal models of escalated rodent aggression, each disentangling the consequences of one particular adverse early-life factor. A review of the human data, as well as those obtained with the animal models of repeated maternal separation, post-weaning social ...
متن کاملGlutamate input in the dorsal raphe nucleus as a determinant of escalated aggression in male mice.
Although the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) has long been linked to neural control of aggression, little is known about the regulatory influences of the DRN when an animal engages in either adaptive species-typical aggressive behavior or escalated aggression. Therefore it is important to explore which neurotransmitter inputs into the DRN determine the escalation of aggression in male mice. Previous...
